Distributional formal semantics

چکیده
Natural language semantics has recently sought to combine the complementary strengths of formal and distributional approaches meaning. However, given fundamentally different ‘representational currency’ underlying these approaches—models world versus linguistic co-occurrence—their unification proven extremely difficult. Here, we define Distributional Formal Semantics, which integrates distributionality into a semantic system on level models. This approach offers probabilistic, distributed meaning representations that are inherently compositional, naturally capture fundamental notions such as quantification entailment. Furthermore, show how probabilistic nature allows for inference, information-theoretic notion “information” (measured in Entropy Surprisal) follows from it. Finally, illustrate can be derived incrementally input using recurrent neural network model, resultant incremental construction procedure intuitively captures key phenomena, including negation, presupposition, anaphoricity.

Towards a Formal Distributional Semantics: Simulating Logical Calculi with Tensors
The development of compositional distributional models of semantics reconciling the empirical aspects of distributional semantics with the compositional aspects of formal semantics is a popular topic in the contemporary literature. This paper seeks to bring this reconciliation one step further by showing how the mathematical constructs commonly used in compositional distributional models, such ...
متن کاملCombining Formal and Distributional Models of Temporal and Intensional Semantics
We outline a vision for computational semantics in which formal compositional semantics is combined with a powerful, structured lexical semantics derived from distributional statistics. We consider how existing work (Lewis and Steedman, 2013) could be extended with a much richer lexical semantics using recent techniques for modelling processes (Scaria et al., 2013)—for example, learning that vi...
متن کاملThe Challenge of Composition in Distributional and Formal Semantics
The principle of compositionality states that the meaning of a complete sentence must be explained in terms of the meanings of its subsentential parts; in other words, each syntactic operation should have a corresponding semantic operation. In recent years, it has been increasingly evident that distributional and formal semantics are complementary in addressing composition; while the distributi...
متن کاملFormal Distributional Semantics: Introduction to the Special Issue
Formal Semantics and Distributional Semantics are two very influential semantic frameworks in Computational Linguistics. Formal Semantics is based on a symbolic tradition and centered around the inferential properties of language. Distributional Semantics is statistical and data-driven, and focuses on aspects of meaning related to descriptive content. The two frameworks are complementary in the...
متن کاملMultimodal Distributional Semantics
Distributional semantic models derive computational representations of word meaning from the patterns of co-occurrence of words in text. Such models have been a success story of computational linguistics, being able to provide reliable estimates of semantic relatedness for the many semantic tasks requiring them. However, distributional models extract meaning information exclusively from text, w...
